Following his graduation from Hillsboro High School in 1971, he attended Portland State University and eventually earned a degree in History.Karl enjoyed working as a lumber broker with his father at Granat Lumber Company, but a year after marrying his wife Lee in 1983, he earned an MBA degree and left to work for the State of Oregon`s Adult & Family Services Division as a fiscal analyst.He worked for AFS for eight years, having to leave due to health problems.Karl had several medical disorders, one of which was Erythromelalgia (EM), a rare, very painful disease which left him bed-bound for four years.
